Canon:
Project Diorama
In 2016, I was part of a team helping Canon to explore how VR experiences can be integrated with their existing products and services and ultimately spark interest within the Canon community.
Telling a story
One of the key goals for the project was to envision an experience that isn't simply a "slideshow in 3d", but rather a qualitatively different and meaningful alternative to it.
The concept focused on telling cohesive and embellished stories. We've leveraged one of Canon's tools - Irista - as a mechanism for identifying related photos and arranging them into narratives. Each narrative would then be broken down into discrete "moments" and represented in the VR environment through clustering of photos and additional pieces of content, aggregated via 3rd party connected services.
Out in the wild
One of Canon's key requirements was to design a prototype that would be more financially accessible than dedicated VR systems such as Oculus. The final prototype was built using open-source software and ran on a Samsung Galaxy S7, with the only VR-specific hardware element being the budget Samsung Gear VR.
